Virginia L Calin
Virginia Letitia Calin (nee Oprea), 90, of Canton, formerly of Chicago Illinois, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 24th in the House of Loreto Nursing Home of Canton.
Virginia was born in New Castle, Pennsylvania on October 1, 1923. The widow of Dan N. Calin, who passed away in 2006, also predeceased by her sister Pauline Voishan. Survived by daughter Paula Ann (The Very Reverend George) Treff; two sons Andrew J. (Debbie) Calin of Antioch, Illinois, The Right Reverend Christopher Calin of New York City; sister in law Mary Jane Calin of Boca Raton, FL; 6 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
She was baptized at St Elias Church in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania. She met Dan N. Calin on Valentine's Day, 1953 in Los Angeles, CA, and the couple were married on April 25, 1953 in Chicago, IL where they made their home. She was a faithful member of St. Mary's Romanian Orthodox Church in Chicago, IL where she served as a member of the Choir, and an officer of the Ladies auxiliary "Credinta", the Romanian-American Memorial AMVETS Post #109, and the Romanian Society "Speranta-Emigrantul", until relocating to Canton, Ohio in 2006. She worked from 1975 until retirement at JC Penny & Company. Virginia also served on the national Boards of ARFORA Association of Romanian Orthodox Ladies Auxiliaries of America, the Orthodox Brotherhood and the Union & League Romanian Societies of America. She was a devoted supporter of the Archbishop Valerian D. Trifa Romanian Heritage Center, the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America, and the Orthodox Church in America.
Visitation from 5:00pm - 7:00pm and Funeral Services at 7:00pm will be held on Tuesday, July 29 th in the St. George Romanian Orthodox Church 144 30 th St NW of Canton. Burial on Wednesday July 30 th at 1:00pm next to her beloved husband Dan at St. Mary's Cemetery/Vatra Romaneasca in Grass Lake, Michigan. Officiating clergy: The Very Reverend George Treff and The Right Reverend Christopher Calin.
In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to House of Loreto who lovingly cared for her in her last years at 2812 Harvard Ave. NY, Canton, OH 44709, and St. George the Great Martyr Romanian Orthodox Church 144 30 th St NW, Canton, OH.
