It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Virginia Dare Jeffries, a cherished leader whose unwavering commitment to education and public service profoundly impacted our community.

Throughout her esteemed career as a retired educator and during her twelve years as a valued member of the Canton City School Board of Education, Virginia devoted herself to championing quality education for all students. Her influence extended beyond the local level, as a distinguished alum and supporter of Spelman College, Atlanta, Georgia. She actively contributed to the Ohio School Boards Association (OSBA) and served as the Program Director for the Ohio State Young Scholars Program. In addition, she served as a trustee on Walsh University's Board of Directors and played a pivotal role in the Lelia Green Alliance of Black School Educators, working tirelessly to support both students and fellow educators.

Virginia's dedication to uplifting her community was evident in her many roles. She served as a trustee for the Stark County Out of Poverty Partnership and held the title of Director Emeritus at Walsh University. In 2001, her commitment to fostering a love of science was recognized with the establishment of the Virginia Jeffries Collection of Science Books, placed in Canton Middle School libraries. This collection stands as a lasting gift that continues to enrich generations of students.

She leaves behind a remarkable legacy defined by compassion, leadership, and steadfast dedication to the well-being of others. Her enduring spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Virginia is survived by her son, Chauncey L. Jeffries, and her daughter, Pamela (Fonda) Williams. She leaves behind her grandsons Benjamin Kirksey, Michael Kirksey, and Chayce Jeffries, and is predeceased by her grandson Chancellor Jeffries. She is also lovingly remembered by her great-granddaughters, Makenzie Kirksey and Makayla Wilkins, and her dearest friend and sister, Alice Doanes; notable nephews, Angelo Powell, whom she regarded as a son, John and Corey Smith. Virginia's legacy continues through her "special daughters": Michelle Stokes, Janet Dickey, Brenda Calhoun, Sentheia McLeod and Lynetta Devereaux, along with a host of other family members and friends whose lives she touched deeply.
Calling hours will be held at St. Paul A.M.E. Church, located at 1800 E. Tuscarawas St, Canton, Ohio 44707, on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. Service will follow immediately after calling hours.
